- Conférence : Harriet Jisa, Université de Lyon 2 : Observing diversity in the development of written language production.

The production of written texts is a very complex process which taps into multiple low and high level processing skills. The principal goal of this presentation is to highlight the importance of representing diversity when collecting a corpus of written discourse. Results from a crosslinguistic developmental project will be used to illustrate how age, text type and language impact written production and can provide a privileged window for observing how high and low levels interact. The participants involved range from novice writers (9- to 10-year-olds) to quasi-experts (university graduate students). The orthographic transparency of the languages involved range from very transparent (Spanish) to very opaque (English). The text types to be compared are personal narratives and expository texts, two text types which call on contrasting types of planning. The conclusion will attempt to describe the commonalities and the specificities of the languages involved and to encourage young researchers to exploit the natural laboratory available for crosslinguistic research within the European context.
